Quest to reset T9 Dictionary [ LG Fusic (LX-550) ]

Recently, the T9 dictionary on my phone (which is a LG LX550, also called the LG Fusic) has become flooded with bad entries, coming from turning off the dictionary and forgetting to turn it back on or other PEBCAK errors on my part (entries such as Hmy, Gdt, and other gems are among the offenders). So, since I had problems finding out how to do it myself, I figured I would share how I reset my dictionary.

First, I guess you need to know what equipment is needed. Of course if you don’t have your LG Fusic this entire set of steps is going to be fairly unnecessary in the first place. You’ll also need the data cables. If you have Windows Vista, your computer can automatically install the LG/Sprint drivers; otherwise, you will probably need to install the driver. Keep in mind the driver only works on Windows, so MacOS/*nix users are kinda out of luck. Since I don’t know whether I can link directly to the software on Sprint’s website, I’ll serve it if you need it.

  1. Direct yourself to BitPim and download the latest copy. As of today, that is version 1.0.5, and does NOT fully support the LG LX550. However, it will detect the phone and allow us to use the functions we need, which is the important part.
  2. If you have not already, this is the time to install the Sprint/LG drivers on your computer. If you have Windows Vista (and possibly XP, haven’t tested that one), just plug in your phone using the cable. It will automatically pull the needed drivers from Windows Update.
  3. Once you start up BitPim after Windows recognizes your Fusic, it will detect “Other CDMA Phone”. Go to View -> Filesystem.
  4. This is about the only function you can use. In the filesystem view, delete “/t9udp/t9udb_eng.dat” Once you have deleted this file, right-click on the directory view and hit “restart phone”. Your phone will now reboot with a cleaned T9 Dictionary

I hope this helps someone, somewhere, who has made the same mistakes I have with my phone’s dictionary. Note that this procedure will result in the loss of ALL of your custom directory entries.

New Security Measures

I have created more security measures for my domains. Now, any access to mattfast1.com, mattvandusen.com or vandusens.us (and their subdomains) by those in certain troublemaking countries will be denied. While in the interest of security I’m not going to reveal my exact methodology for these filters, let’s just say it’ll take a bit of effort for them to break through.

The effect this should have is to GREATLY reduce the comment spams that are caught by Spam Karma, reduce (or completely eliminate) the bad URLs accessed and noted on my stats. Legitimate users will hopefully not feel the sting of bad 403 errors, but if you send me a message telling me who you are, what you were trying to do, and (roughly) what time it was, I can generally unblock you. I realize those who are being blocked will not be able to read this text from my website, but you will be able to read it on the many mirrors of my blog that update via RSS.

Note that this only represents a portion of my traffic. If the spammers keep harassing me, even with the new measures in place, I will continue to block entire countries. As it is I’m tempted to block most of the countries on two entire continents, those being Asia and Africa. They’re lucky I haven’t blocked them all out yet.

Matt 2.1

Welcome to the new release of Matt, which includes several code enhancements including fewer memory leaks, a cleaner environment, and a less restrictive parent set. Several key components have been rewritten from the ground up, and new features have been added, including the ability to process the A_COHOL environment variable without causing an illegal error. We promise this new version is faster and more productive than older versions, and urge you to upgrade immediately.

Life, or something like it

Can I ever just have a day off?

I have had Sunday and Monday off this week. Both days, I’ve had calls from work, trying to get me to come in and work. Both days, I haven’t picked up the phone when they’ve called. After all, I work ALL the time; the way I see it, I deserve to take any off days I can get. I don’t care if they’re in a bind and have no one to cover Starbucks. If they really need someone to come in, they can call one of the other certified baristas they have. I don’t need to be the first on their speed dial.

*points at self* You fucking dumbass!

Gah, my work schedule is just getting out of control.

I mean, first I’m scheduled to work back-to-back shifts of 7:30-4. That’s bad enough, right?

Well, around 10 this morning, Andrea, who was supposed to close Starbucks tonight, called in sick. That put us in a right panicky mode, since the only people who know how to close Starbucks are myself, Andrea, Ben, Brandy, Courtney, and Nicole. Well, I wasn’t going to stay to close after opening, and since Courtney opened Food Avenue this morning, she was out too. Nicole was the opening GSTL, so that wasn’t an option. So the only one we had left was Ben, who’s been complaining about how few hours he got this week… which, ironically, so had Andrea. So we call Ben, and he doesn’t want to take the shift.

After that, we try to figure things out, and Lindsay, the midshift worker over in Food Avenue, tells us that she’ll learn how to close. So we decide that’s the only way that’s gonna work. Unfortuanely, Lindsay only knew how to make Frappuchinos. So I had to train her to make everything else in two hours.

That didn’t happen. Instead, I end up staying an hour late, doing most of the tasks of closing so it’d be easier on both Lindsay at night and myself in the morning.

And now I’m going to bed, since I have to be awake at 5:30 tomorrow morning (yet again……..)

Working the SB Transition

Right, so today is the day that every Starbucks location in the country transitions to the holiday set.

I worked this transition the other day, and I gotta tell ya, it was really great. Except for the fact that I had to sit behind two large Albanian women with excruciatingly severe body odor. Oh, wait, that’s a song. Never mind.

The point is that I didn’t go in to work until 9:00 last night. I thought I’d only be there an hour at most, but we (my boss Brandy and I) didn’t get even CLOSE to being finished until 10:45, at which time everyone was threatening to kill us if we didn’t stop, clock out, and leave. After all, the LODs refused to open the doors until we were done. So we left Brandy a huge mess to clean up this morning. It’s all good, though. We got the major aspects of the transition done, except for the holiday trim on our floor baskets, since the Kent Distribution Center (in Seattle) failed to send us that box.

I get to go in tomorrow. I don’t know what time right now, but sometime.

So I try to log into dA today…

Yeah, so, I just tried a visit to my domain on deviantART.

It came back with an error code 500. Apparently, they’re having some trouble with their database servers.

Perhaps their dbAdmins shouldn’t have started changing various pieces of data, such as $spyed’s join date… Perhaps the black ninja shouldn’t be such an idiot… but that’s only the opinion of the community, which he’s already shown he totally disregards.

My announcement

Seeing as I worked an eight hour day today, and I work an eight hour day tomorrow beginning at 8:15, I am going to bed.

That is all.

I do enjoy my check fraud…

Hokay, so, I had a guy come in today.

That was the normal part.

As soon as these guys came around the corner, I started getting suspicious, ’cause they were buying an xBox. No one in their right mind buys and xBox. He was also buying Halo 2, and about 500 bucks worth of other stuff. All in all, the bill came to $733.73 (yes, I remember the actual amount… I’ve gotten to where I remember these kind of things).

Then he tried using a check to pay for it. The computer (wisely) asks for ID, and this guy gives it to me. Then, the computer asked me to dial 717 (some financial service guy in Minnesota) for authorization. And of course, they refuse to authorize the check.

So I convince this guy that he should apply for the Target REDcard. As it turned out, that was the smartest thing I’d done all day, since he agreed. So we gather all his information, and I run his application. He’s disapproved by the automated checkers, but we still have his application on file.

So now, we have at best a guy who can’t get any kind of slack. At worst, we have a really, really, really dumb criminal, since we now have his address (past and present), social security number, phone numbers, full name, and a bunch of other identifying information.

That’s gonna make it real easy for AP to investigate this case - especially since this guy tried the same thing at T-271 Douglas County as well. So now two stores have an ongoing interest in the case, along with great video of him and his cronies. Add to that the fact that our undercover person was watching these guys real close, and you just know that this guy’s gonna get caught very soon.

I do love uncovering tricks, though. Bad check fraud is the second crime I’ve come across in our store this week; I also caught a ticket-switcher who wanted a $130 calculator for $19.99, and paid with a credit card… so we’ve got him covered, too.

And of course, there’s Peter, Bob, and Lisa. Them’s always fun. What, you don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, I should tell you: Peter means pick up everything that enters register, Bob means check bottom of basket, and Lisa means look inside all. These are the three biggest principles of cashiering. That, and quickness. Much quickness.

Dang, that is some seriously bad karma, you might say…

Hrm… it seems when I installed this new theme, I forgot to check and make sure it was compatible with my spam prevention plugin, Spam Karma 2.

Obviously, since I’m blogging about it, it failed the tests.

Although, it did cause some pretty spectacular false postitives and exceedingly low karmas. A couple comments even managed to scrape karmas in the negative sixties… one of which was a comment by Sadie. Good thing I was paying attention, and manually raised the karma of her comment by 70.

Back to coding…
